Speaking in Shannon today (Friday, 14 November 2008), John Brassil, Chairman of Shannon Development, warmly welcomed the announcement by Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey TD, that the Irish and US governments have agreed to full pre-clearance facilities for all US bound flights from Shannon.
Mr Brassil congratulated Minister Dempsey and his officials in the Department of Transport, and Mr Pat Shanahan, Chairman of Shannon Airport Authority, and his team at the Airport, on delivering this major incentive for air traffic growth, both passenger and cargo, for Shannon and the West Coast Corridor.
Also welcoming the announcement, Dr Vincent Cunnane, Chief Executive of Shannon Development said “Full Pre-Clearance at Shannon will allow passengers from Shannon to arrive in the US as domestic passengers with no queuing for Immigration or Customs. It would also allow Shannon passengers to make hassle free transfers at US hubs with considerable savings in time. For airlines, it will allow seamless connections at US hubs and allow carriers to use less expensive domestic airports in the US”.
Dr Cunnane concluded “Today’s announcement will help secure Shannon Airport’s key economic role as a transatlantic gateway for business and tourism traffic to this region”.
